The AWE ColdFront™ Intercooler Kit leverages generations of Porsche engineering, dating back to the 996. Cast end tanks designed in-house, specially designed cores, power testing, dyno-fueled refinement, and more. Compared to the 991’s stock intercoolers, the AWE ColdFront™ Intercooler Kit’s cores are 17% larger (523 cubic inches vs 448 cubic inches). In contrast to the stock cores, the AWE ColdFront™ Intercoolers are a high-flow bar and plate style and are built to our charge row and fin count specifications. These specifications result in 20% reduced air temperatures and 50% improved pressure resistance through the cores. These lowered air temperatures and freer flow allowed the AWE Porsche 991 Turbo S to achieve dyno-verified max gains of 26 HP and 21 lb-ft of torque at the crank when used with the AWE 991 Turbo Performance Exhaust and S-FLO Carbon Intake, and performance software, translating to almost a full second reduction in 60-130 mph acceleration times. AWE designed the biggest cores the 991 TT rear fenders could fit, and as a result of the size difference, the OEM ducts couldn’t be utilized. To feed fresh, cooler air to the intercooler cores, proper flowing ducts are mandatory. The result: straightforward and bolt-in carbon fiber, seamlessly mating to the AWE ColdFront™ Intercoolers. No trimming or cutting necessary — the AWE Fitment Guarantee remains intact. In addition to the superior core and end tank design, the AWE ColdFront™ Intercooler Kit for the Porsche 991TT also features thick wall 6-ply silicone hoses with gentle curves to prevent bursting under pressure. They are attached to the factory intake and turbos by stainless steel high-force t-bolt clamps, and a molded lip is integrated where the hoses meet the turbos to duplicate the factory locking mechanism. Inlet Air Temperatures are a major area of concern for any turbocharged car. With many modified 996 TTs producing greater than factory horsepower figures, the limits of the stock intercooling system have been far exceeded. Capable of handling well over 700hp, AWE 996TT Intercoolers are the best solution for owners looking to upgrade their factory system with a properly engineered solution. AWE designed a cast end tank utilizing CAD and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software to ensure proper flow distribution through the end tanks and intercooler. Tested extensively on AWE’s in-house dyno, street, and track, these intercoolers will perform flawlessly no matter the environment. Compared to stock, AWE cores are 37% larger (422 cubic inches vs 308 cubic inches). In contrast to the stock cores, AWE’s are a high flow bar and plate style. The result? Behind the scenes: During development of AWE’s (now discontinued) 750R Turbo Kit for the 997.2TT, we experienced excessively high intake air temperatures. Since an OEM option was not available, and our power goals were well north of 700hp, we undertook the task to construct a completely new intercooler system. Once the end tanks were designed, then cast, they were then machined on our CNC mill, welded to specially designed cores, power tested, and refined on our AWD dyno. AWE Performance Intercoolers – Porsche 997.2 Turbo / S
During development of the AWE 2.0T Q5 exhaust systems with performance software, high intake air temperatures were present. The stock front mount intercooler isn’t able to effectively cool the intake charge at that performance level, allowing temperatures to rise and hurt performance as rpms increase. With this in mind, AWE set out to develop the Q5 Front Mount Intercooler in order to bring intake temperatures back under control. AWE employed CAD modeling software to design an intercooler that uses an end tank / core package significanty larger than stock while striving to re-use the robust factory hoses and clamps to keep costs down. This end tank design is a proven winner and is in use on multiple platforms. While AWE knew this engine ran very hot, and could really benefit from improved intercooling, the test results were shocking. The AWE FMIC was able to reduce Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) by a maximum of 31 degrees F over stock, a difference of nearly 25%! The massive drop in IATs will yield even better performance in warmer climates and higher power applications. Whether you are simply running enhanced software, or are planning on a larger turbo upgrade for your car, the AWE intercooler solves all heat related issues that come with more turbo boost. This may be enough to keep IAT’s in check on a completely unmodified / stock vehicle, but once users to start increase power through bolt-on modifications, tuning, and built engines, the OEM intercooler will become the Achilles Heel of the system with IAT’s skyrocketing out of the optimal range and drastically lowering the performance capabilities of the vehicle.
