TTE390 5150 VAG 1.8T UPGRADE TURBOCHARGER
The TTE390 turbocharger is a high-performance upgrade engineered by Turbo Engineers for VAG 1.8T 20V engines. It is developed from a heavily modified OEM BorgWarner K04-064 turbo originally designed for the 2.0TFSI platform (where it is known as the TTE420). Proven to deliver 390+ PS on 1.8T applications, the TTE390 offers a substantial performance increase while maintaining reliability and drivability.
Customers may either purchase a fully built replacement unit or send their own original K04-064 turbocharger (in good condition) for professional upgrade conversion.
Engineering & Performance Enhancements
The TTE390 is built around a significantly larger 2871X TTE billet compressor wheel, selected for its exceptional efficiency and modern blade design with ultra-thin aero profiles. The compressor housing is precision re-profiled and machined to optimized tolerances to maximize airflow efficiency. Additionally, the intake pipe is ported to ensure smooth air transition into the compressor.
A CNC-machined TTE silencer delete is installed, and the turbo discharge silencer is internally modified with a straight-through section to eliminate restriction and remove the factory noise-dampening baffles. This improves airflow, reduces surge, and enhances turbo acoustics.
Driving the larger compressor is a carefully engineered turbine upgrade: a substantially larger curved-clipped K16 turbine and shaft assembly integrated into the K04 core. This advanced turbine significantly lowers back pressure and reduces exhaust gas temperatures compared to standard or clipped stock turbines commonly used elsewhere.
The turbine clipping process is a proprietary TTE grinding method applied to the blade tips with a curved stress-relief profile. This reduces blade surface area, allowing higher gas flow, decreased back pressure, and safer operation at elevated boost levels. The process also reduces rotational mass, improving inertia characteristics. Dyno testing shows near-stock response with dramatic gains in power and torque.
Motorsport-Grade Bearing System
Each unit is equipped with a TTE in-house developed 360° high-performance journal bearing system, designed for durability under high loads while maintaining excellent transient response and stability.
The turbo uses an uprated spring actuator based on an OE unit, reinforced with heavy-duty clamps for reliable operation. Custom actuator calibration can be provided upon request to suit specific performance requirements.
Precision Balancing & Quality Control
Balance accuracy is critical for both performance and longevity. Every TTE turbocharger undergoes a multi-stage balancing process:

Individual components are pre-balanced at speeds up to 2,800 RPM in multiple planes.

After assembly, the CHRA is dynamically balanced at speeds up to 250,000 RPM using an in-house VSR machine.
This process achieves balance tolerances significantly exceeding OEM standards. Each turbocharger is supplied with a serial-numbered balance test certificate verifying its calibration.
